“We believe they were fighting for dominance, since the younger attacked the older first.” One of your father co-workers told him.

“Why are they only acting this way now? We found them working together in the wild…” your father asked.

“Of course they didn’t have a female to fight over there.”

“But they’ve been watching her for months, why are they fighting now? Do you think it has anything to do with her kissing them on the cheeks?”

The two men entered the birdmen’s now separated pens. It was the original that they had put up a wall in between the two, so they could only see each other. Both were beaten and torn from their fight, so they had gauze and bandages all over them. Ludwig gave death glares to all passersby, and Gilbert was tucked in the corned closet to the glass and Ludwig’s side, nursing a broken arm. His ruby eyes searched the crowd diligently, and then he tucked himself away again.

“He’s been looking for her.” Your father’s friend told him.

“What should we do? There’s no way I’m bringing her back, she wouldn’t want to in the first place.” Your father told them all.

“Well she’s the only one who could probably get them to calm down enough.”

“Are we really going to chance that? What if bringing her here only enrages them more? Or even gets them mad at her?!”

“They’re not going to damage what they believe to be the prize!”

“We don’t know what comes natural for these things, it might be in their nature to cannibalize for all we know! She could be dead by morning!!”

“You didn’t care this much when you brought her in!”

“THAT’S BECAUSE SHE WAS SAFE!!”

Everyone jolted back from the man and murmured at his words. Gilbert turned around and stared ta him, pondering what to do or say. Ludwig was doing the same, but he looked completely uninterested.

All heads turned to Gilbert, who was gently rapping on the glass. “Ve’ll behave if you bring her~” he grinned.

“She is not coming back here!” your father scowled.

“Zose feazer’s von’t keep her vell forever, she’ll have to come back sooner or later.”

“Then she’ll come when they wear off, and only then.” your father spat.

“Ve haven’t seen her in two days, she’ll be back soon. Zose feazer’s don’t last very long.”

“You said you didn’t know how long they would last!”

“I don’t, but I remember my mother feeling sick after a few days of my father missing. Fun fact: he was gone for a year, and zat’s how mom died.”

“…Did he ever come home?”

“…no…mom vas ze last vwone in our flock, ozer zan Ludvig and me. She only lasted as long as she did because of us.”

“So what would happen to _______ if you two were to die?”

“She vould be fine, ze love sickness wears off if she never attempted children vis us.”

Angry squawking caught everyone’s attention as Ludwig began to screech at his brother, who began to screech back. They began to claw at the wall that separated them from tearing each other apart.

While they did that, your father’s phone rang, telling him that you were calling. “D-dad? I think the feathers wore off, I’m not feeling so good…” you told him over the phone.

Your father sighed and looked at his co-workers. “Be right there honey…”

You walked once again, next to the cell of the birdmen. You winced from the loud screeching of the brothers and the look of their injuries. Your already screaming headache almost made you drop to your knees, and the commotion between the two didn’t help, so before anyone knew it, you intervened.

“Knock it off!!” you screamed at them, silencing them immediately. You dropped to your knees, holding your head.

The two birdmen rushed to where you sat and began to claw at the glass again. “Come here ______, I can help!” Gilbert called.

Ludwig didn’t say anything, but gave you such a look of distress and slight anger, and you could see his rage rise as his eyes went to his brother. Gilbert on the other hand didn’t even glance to his kin, his eyes remained frozen on you. Washing over you, wanting you.

Your father took you to a place in-between the cells where both birdmen could touch you and heal you. Gilbert and Ludwig shot their arms out so fast it scared you, but their touch made you feel better immediately.

You tried to pull away from them, but neither grip hindered. You looked to them to find their angry gazes at each other, their grip slowly growing tighter on you. “G-guys! Snap out of it!” you yelled at them.

Gilbert looked up to you and began to flutter his wings to you in a flirtatious manner. Ludwig mimicked this, only in his own style and position. Gilbert began to coo at you, to get your attention, almost in a desperate way.

“Dad, what are they doing?” you asked, now frightened.

“Simple dear, the males are trying to impress the female, like birds of paradise, or a rooster for his hen.” You father shrugged.

“Pardon me dad, but don’t roosters kill each other for the bride?!” you almost screeched.

“They’re separated honey, they can’t kill each other if they can’t make contact.”

“Both of you let me go!” you commanded them strongly.

“Pick vwone of us!” Gilbert demanded.

“Me or my broder!” Ludwig added with a hiss.

“Let me go or I won’t!” you spat back to them. They gave you a look of fury before finally releasing you, letting the feather’s around your neck once again take effect. You quickly plugged up the holes before they could reach for you again.

You watched the two of them retreat to their perches with grumbling and glares.

“How long do you think they’ll wait patiently for my choice?” you asked your dad
nervously.

“Hard to say, but I will not force you into anything more sweetie. If you want to choose one you can, maybe they’ll let you choose both, who knows. All I know is they didn’t seem to have a problem sharing you till you kissed Ludwig’s cheek.”

“You think they might have taken that as me picking a favorite?” you swallowed.

“Maybe you could explain to the two that you can’t choose one, maybe they’ll agree on a truce then.”

“I don’t know dad, they don’t exactly seem the type to negotiate…”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“What do you mean they’ve stopped eating?!” you asked your father. It was the day after they had renewed your feather cure, and you hadn’t talked to them yet.
“Anytime we ask them why, they simply say to either prove themselves to you, or that they are saving it for you.” your dad told you after bursting through the door in a huff. “Dear, I will keep to my word and ask no more from you, but…”
“I’ll go and talk some sense into them.” you told him. “Unfortunately, having a couple of guys fighting over me has made me gain some feelings for their well-being.”
You were quickly taken back to the labs where you saw the brother’s full dishes of meat being neglected. You searched for the two to find them once again looking at each other, but to your great surprise, they were looks of fondness, like they were missing each other.
You feared to speak up in case your voice would power the hostility they recently had, but you were assured that their hunger has made them less hostile toward each other.
“Gilbert! Ludwig!” you called to them. Their gaze immediately shot to you, but that was their only motion. “Please come down! I need to talk to you guys!”
They slowly crawled their ways down, proving their weakness to not be an act. They both crouched down close to the glass near you. “You guys have to stop being so dramatic!” you told them with slight anger rising.
They looked at you blankly for a minute then Ludwig sighed. “______, you really must pick vwone of us. If you do, ze ozer vill leave you alone, no matter the choice.”
“I don’t need a mate right now, I-”
“Vell you have two right now, vaiting very patiently for you to decide!” Gilbert spat. “Vy do you zink our species is practically extinct? You have any idea how many of zese cases ve’ve see in our old flock?”
“It may seem strange to you, but ven a female von’t choose between a mate in our culture, ze males fight it out and ze vwone still alive gets ze girl. Just take a guess on ze chances of vwone of zem surviving.” Ludwig added darkly.
“What-No! I don’t want you guys to kill each other!”
“Ve vill for you, if you refuse to choose!” Gilbert spat.
“I CAN’T!!” they bother looked startled to your outburst. Tears began to flow from your
eyes as you continued to speak. “You’re basically asking me to choose which one I want killed because no matter what it seems like you guys are going to kill each other. You can’t make me kill someone that way!”
The two looked at you a minute then slowly crawled away from each other. Gilbert sat on a branch with a thoughtful look on his face as he stroked the cast of his broken arm. Ludwig stood up and sighed, glancing back at you.
“If you von’t choose…I vill!” your eyes widened as he suddenly tore off a branch from the jungle biome made by your father’s teams, and opened his wings to their full extent. The white glossy feathers seemed to shimmer as they struck the ground with such dangerous force that it kicked up a lot of dust from the dirt covered ground.
The glass of Ludwig’s side was almost completely fogged from the dust, and as you panicked, you shot your gaze to Gilbert who also was looking in alarm. Suddenly, the sound of cracking glass caught everyone’s attention. The wall between the bird brothers shattered abruptly, making you scream.
Ludwig came into Gilbert’s clearing, with shattered glass in his skin and the branch in hand almost broken in half. Gilbert looked frightened, but after stealing a glance from you, his eyes fill with fury and cockiness. He smirked as he stretched his wings out and screeched at his brother, displaying the attempt to look much larger than he was.
His black feathers beat the ground, letting more dust to kick up and guard your view just as you watched Ludwig tackle his wounded brother. You put your face to the glass in fear of what was going to happen.
You could barely hear the commotion from the scientists behind you, panicking to the situation. Screeching and screaming erupted from the pen, making your stomach churn and your heart clench.
“Ludwig! Gilbert, please stop!!” you screamed to them, hoping your futile shriek could make it to them.
Slowly, the cries from inside began to die down, making you quake with fear of why. Little by little, the dust began to settle, revealing a gruesome scene. You screamed at the sight of both brother’s torn to bits, Gilbert’s severed head off on its own while Ludwig’s body looked just as massacred.
You broke into full out sobs as you turned and embraced your father. He held you close as total silence swarmed the room.
“I should have just chose dad… I might have saved them both!” you sobbed.
“No dear, they were both so infatuated with that the one not chosen would have killed himself. I’m sure of that…” he told you softly.
“So there was nothing I could do…?”
“Probably not. But how I see it, is any species with terms like that, deserves to be extinct…they weren’t extinct because of humans, that’s for sure…”
“Theirs was…”
“Theirs was for love dear, and many of our kind die for that too. It’s something worth dying for I’d say…especially your love.”
It gets a little messy...
well there you are, The last chapter! to be honest, this was really the best ending I could think up. Hope you all like it and that I filled up your expectation or at least made a good effort
